Just a quick note today to check in about schedules over the holidays. And, of course, to reassure you that classes this week are happening as usual!
I’m wondering if Infinity folks are interested in class on Friday the 24th, Christmas Eve. I’m thinking of taking Monday the 27th off to enjoy a 3 day weekend, just in case that affects how you feel about practicing on the 24th.
I hope your holiday planning is as fun and bright as the trees above.
Much Love,

“To most human beings, wind is an irritation. To most trees, wind is a song.”

Hi!
As I write this, I’m listening to the wind outside our windows. Admittedly it sounds cold and uninviting, but from the point of view of a windmill, wind is a powerful energy of good!
I’ve actually been thinking a lot about points of view this week as Brett and I watched the Holiday Edition of Taste the Nation: Truth and the Turkey Tale. I highly suggest watching it even if you’re already familiar with The Day of Mourning. If nothing else, it will make you want to visit Cape Cod for the food!
And speaking of Thanksgiving and our traditions. I talked to the Root River group this morning and we’ll be practicing on Thursday as we do every week. Infinity folks, are you around Friday? Do you want a quiet morning to yourself and your families or are you interested in practicing together? If you’re reading this let me know.

I was thinking of you all today when I stopped by Infinity to peek in at our studio. The old floor is completely removed and ready for the new floor to be installed, as well as the other repairs that need to happen. I will let you know as soon as I get the word that work has started, or if I find out more about timing. For now, we’ll be cozily practicing in amongst the skeins (at Yarnology).

Hi There,
Just a quick note to remind you that there’s no class this upcoming Monday. I have an early start to a project day, so wish me good weather!
Several of you have asked me how you know when your card runs out. Good Question! Right now Heather is marking cards once a month when she takes care of payroll, and at that time she is also contacting anyone who is out of classes. Don’t worry if you get an email that lets you know you owe for classes, everyone involved knows there would be no way for you to have that information and you are not in trouble.
See you on the mat!

Hi Friends,
The leaves on the ground remind me of last fall and our last practices outside with leaves underfoot. While I will be honest enough to say that I prefer warm feet and predictable environments for my practices and especially for teaching, I cherish the adventure we all had together.
This fall I have been focused on some creative projects and some house projects that we are finally able to do. This is all good, but this last week I was so distracted that I forgot to write a newsletter on Thursday, let alone think about checking to make sure everything was ok with our Zoom classes! I am so sorry about that, thank you so much for your graciousness and flexibility!
Speaking of house projects, I need to cancel class Monday Nov. 1st, a friend of ours is helping us replace the screen on our porch and since this is an all day (or 2) project beginning with us picking up scaffolding to reach our second story porch, I need to be able to start right away. Thank you in advance for understanding.
I took this morning to catch up a bit, and have created new Zoom classes and registered all of you who were registered before. If you want to stop receiving reminder emails every week, let me know and that can be arranged!
I heard from Heather this past week concerning the studio. She said that they planned to start ripping up the remainder of the floor last Friday but the contractors wouldn’t be able to start repairing them for a minimum of 4 weeks. So this doesn’t tell us a whole lot in terms of timing, but at least we know that the project is still moving forward.
I also wanted to share that I ran into Randy Severson last week in a serendipitous meeting in Menard’s parking lot. He says “hello” to everyone and is hoping to pop in after class to say hello to us all in person. He’s going to have a hip replacement but hopes to be back to class at some point after that. He is still stretching and still smiling and still has a cup of coffee in his hand.
This week I plan to return to the Thursday Newsletter schedule.

Sometimes I wish I could photosynthesize so that just by being, just by shimmering at the meadow’s edge or floating lazily on a pond, I could be doing the work of the world while standing silent in the sun.~Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants.
Hello Friends,
This week I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with some old friends and much of our conversations centered around being present in nature. I visited one friend’s garden that she’s tended over the past several decades by sitting quietly with each new plant and listening to where it wanted to be planted. The result is a marvelous cultivated wildness.
Another friend told me of how he rediscovers his favorite trails by hiking them with his children. How he’s trying to relearn as an adult the kind of curiosity and presence he witnesses in the young.
Meanwhile Brett, Lulu and I have been taking our evening walks on our road. Our usual route, in my mind, is a practical one, dictated by avoiding a Shepard that brings out the worst in Lulu while remaining close enough to home that we don’t have to drive anywhere. Last night Brett revealed its his favorite walk and I found myself appreciating the valley where we live even more than usual.
I hope that you are having experiences that open up the world around you in beautiful ways. I hope that you find unexpected doorways into curiosity and even joy.
Much love,
Elle

This is just a quick note to say hello, and assure you nothing has changed for our schedule this upcoming week. If you have a space reserved to practice in person at Yarnology, that reservation will continue on for October.
Still no news of when the studio will be ready for us, but whenever I feel frustrated by that fact, I remember how lucky we are to have a nurturing community around us willing and able to create space for us.
I hope you are getting out to enjoy this beautiful weather and I will see many of you tomorrow!

Hello Friends,
Just a quick reminder that we are on Zoom only tomorrow (Friday) as Yarnology is preparing for an online event and needs the space. If by any chance you are interested in an online yarn store crawl let me know and I will make sure you have access. Though I’m guessing most of you have already spent far more time in a yarn store than you ever imagined you would!
I noticed some good beginner size needles in the shop so if any of you are interested in learning to knit let me know and we can plan a knitting hang out for after class. I heard from Heather this week and there is still no news of when we’ll be back in our studio. So we have plenty of time in our cozy shop.

Hi!
I hope you all have had a glorious week since the last time we practiced! As many of you know, I had family in town, and it was the best kind of visit. Laughter was the norm at mealtimes, as I reconnected with cousins who feel more like a sister and a nephew. I learned distant relatives of mine are buried at Woodlawn, and even saw the graves. And much of this was possible because things went wrong in the most delightful way. Meaning as my family pulled into town their car started making funny noises, which turned out to be an easy, inexpensive fix at Ace Auto, but gave us an unexpected extra day together.
Somewhere in all the busy-ness of the week, I haven’t written a newsletter until now! And the thing is I’m quite enjoying writing to you all as I drink my coffee and wait for it to be time to teach a Root River Zoom class, so I think I’m going to switch the Newsletter days to Thursdays for a bit to see how it goes. I think this will still give you all the important news and help me reclaim yet more of my weekend.
Other than this wild Newsletter day change, I don’t have much new to share. I stopped into the studio yesterday and the floor was still torn up and the office let me know workmen hadn’t been in for weeks. In general the timing is very uncertain. We will get back into our studio eventually but for now we are at Yarnology and on Zoom. This means, of course, we have smaller class sizes, so please be in touch with me if you are hoping to practicing in person.
Much love,

Hello Everyone,
As many of you know Yarnology has been dealing with some painting fumes from the building next door which shares some of the duct work. It was bad enough that I worked from home! Even “normal” people got headaches. The good news is that it’s improving quickly. Monday’s class is still a Zoom-only class, but my expectation is that by Friday we will be back in Yarnology practicing yoga among the skeins.
I am taking Labor Day off, as I have cousins in town. Linda is the kind of cousin that both my sister and I describe as the sister we’ve always wanted. Mostly we do this because it’s funny to see the reactions of the people around us, but still it speaks to how close we are. Jay, her son, is also amazing. I haven’t seen them in person for a few years and I plan on eating up every minute with them!
This Wednesday morning is our last outdoor class for the season, and the forecast — as of right now — is predicting sun!
Thank you so much for all your flexibility this week. You are amazing!

Hello Everyone,
I have been giving a lot of careful thought to our fall schedule. As some of you know by now I have realized I need a little more time and energy to devote to some personal projects and my own practice. Taking a break from classes is not an easy decision for me, as I love practicing with you all, and many of you have been a huge support to me personally, and I hate to let you down. However, the good part about teaching many times a week is if I drop one class there are others you can attend.
Regular Root River Yogis, have likely already heard I’m taking a break from my Wednesday evening classes. I will, of course, still be teaching Thursday morning and the recordings of those classes will be available. For those few of you who can’t make morning classes, I will miss you. However, I know there are many other amazing evening Root River Classes so I trust your practice won’t be interrupted. I am still here if you have any questions or there’s anything I can do for you.
I am also going to take a break from my Wednesday classes in Winona once our outdoor classes come to an end on Sept. 1st. As you likely remember we had planned to move this class indoors at Infinity. With our local Covid cases up, air quality and time for the studio to air out in-between classes is once again an issue at Infinity Studio, making our Wednesday morning time slot unavailable. I am not closing this door permanently, I know there could be other options for practice. But for right now, I’m going to take a needed break. I apologize for the turn around.
Monday /Friday classes, please continue to register with me, if you want to practice in person. We are still practicing at Yarnology and the space is limited. Also for those of you showing up early to help me move all the displays out of the way, don’t worry about tomorrow, I moved them before I left last night so we’re all set to go!
Thank you all for your support and understanding.
So much love,
Elle

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do

“How Superheroes Make Money: – Spider-Man knits sweaters. – Superman screw the lids on pickle jars. – Iron Man, as you would suspect, just irons.” ― Jim Benton
Hi Everyone,
One of my interview questions when I applied at Yarnology was, “what is your superpower”? To be honest I don’t remember my answer, but I do remember what an interesting question it was.
What I love about the quote above is the juxtaposition of super powers with seemingly banal tasks. Well, ok, knitting is amazing. But ironing and tightening jars are certainly not usually seen as part of the hero’s journey. For me, and I suspect many others, the every day, seemingly small tasks are actually the hardest.
All of this is my way of saying I’m inspired by your persistence and dedication, to showing up for your own practice every week, but also to coming together as a group. There are many options for yoga in our community, especially if you include online options! You are truly super heroes.
The lamb in tree pose is meant to signal that we’ll still be meeting at Yarnology this Friday. Please let me know if you’re planning on attending, especially if you plan to attend in person. Even though I feel good about the air quality at Yarnology, I’m mindful of needing to give everyone their room to breathe.

Dear friends,
Thank you so much for your support and willingness to go with the flow this past week. You’re all inspiring and I’m so grateful to know you.
As most of you know by now, the Infinity Yoga Studio is momentarily closed due to water damage. I heard from Heather and “it is looking like it will be more complicated than anticipated,” meaning it could be weeks rather than days before we are able to return to Infinity Yoga Studio. I am feeling some sadness for our floor that will be replaced, but I am reminded that our yoga community isn’t dependent on a studio or even props, but rather our group persistently practicing together.
For the time being we will continue to practice at Yarnology on Monday and Friday mornings. If you are craving outdoor practices, keep in mind that Wednesday classes are at the High School at 8:15am. No registration needed for Wednesday classes; please continue registering for Mon/Fri classes. Zoom is also an option for Monday/Friday classes.
Next Monday, August 9th, I’m unavailable and had lined up a sub. However, this has gotten decidedly more complicated, so as of right now, we’re going to take that day off. I will let you know if anything changes.
Lastly, I know many of you are facing obstacles to your practice right now. Please let me know if there’s anything more I can do to support you.

I come to your inbox bearing good news! I’ve communicated with Heather and beginning this fall, our Wednesday class will be moving indoors to Infinity Yoga Studio, assuming that the risk of gathering together indoors continues to be low. I don’t know yet if I will have a choice between the start times of 7:45am or 8:15am, but I am interested in hearing from you if you have a preference. Also, Sara has confirmed that the 20-class cards have been re-instated at their original price of $140.
I also want to thank all of you who have been showing up Wednesdays and contributing cash to Our Voices. This organization was started by a mother to support BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students in Winona. I’m so grateful to be in a solid enough place this summer that I can give back to our community, and that is 100% due to you and all of your support this past year.
I also hope the donation model allows for students who couldn’t otherwise afford studio fees to attend. I also hope that the outdoor classes provide a fun, less intimidating atmosphere. Please invite friends and family — drop ins are totally welcome.

Hi,
I hope you’re having a relaxing weekend! And just as a reminder, we don’t have class this Memorial Day. Sleep in, go for a walk, and if you feel inspired to practice, feel free to make use of any of the videos on the site.
There’s a lot to let you know about this week, so bear with me. First, for Root River Yogis, if you haven’t registered for Summer session and plan on doing so, make sure to get that in as soon as possible. Thank You!
Secondly, I am looking forward to visiting my family in June. We haven’t seen each other in well over a year! For those of you practicing with me over Zoom through Infinity or attending Wednesday morning classes, this means we will have a little interruption in our practice. Below you’ll see the dates we don’t have Zoom classes; all other classes will continue.
Many of us have been looking forward to Wednesday morning outdoor classes, and you can find information below. The link to register isn’t live quite yet, but you’ll have it the moment I do!
Thank you for your ongoing flexibility and support. I look forward to a fun summer with you all!

Live isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.
~ Vivian Greene
Hi Everyone,
I usually try to find quotes that aren’t quite as popular as this one so that you have a little variety when you open these newsletters, but this one seemed too perfect for my mood this morning not to share. Not only is it drizzling as I write this, but the sentiment speaks to how I see my practice. That I’m not avoiding the rain, but keeping myself strong enough that I can see rain for what it is. I might not think I like it, but I can thrive/dance/find joy in it nonetheless.
I wanted to give everyone a heads up that we won’t have class on May 31st, which is over Memorial Day weekend. If you are yearning to practice please feel free to make use of the videos here on yogaelle.com. I hope you have a great day off!
For those of you looking forward to practicing outside this summer we have a firm start date of June 23rd at 8:15am at Winona Senior High School. There will be more information in next week’s newsletter, including how to register through community ed, and a reminder of how all of that will work.
Let me know if you’re interested in practicing in person at Infinity on Monday or Friday. In alignment with the CDC’s recommendations, if you’re fully vaccinated you can practice without a mask.
If you’re wondering what to contribute, consider paying the same amount you’d pay if this class were at your usual studio. As always, these classes are offered on a pay what you can, if you can basis.
As always, these are shared with you under the category “pay what you can, if you can.” Here’s the link to PayPal your support: https://www.paypal.me/ElleNewman11
