Newsletter for week of March 29th

The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.
–Barbara Kingsolver, Animal Dreams

Happy Sunday Friends!

It’s so much easier to live in hope right now than it was a year ago. And I’m so so thankful for that. I’m also, as always, so thankful to all of you. This past year would have been much harder for me without you. And I’m so proud of us that we made it through with our little yoga community intact!

Of course, I am also looking forward to practicing with more of you in person! Root River Yogis, I’m sure Amanda will communicate with us all when she knows how she’s going to proceed. Meanwhile lets keep talking about the possibility of a special outdoor yoga gathering!

For Infinity yogis, as long as we keep within CDC guidelines Heather is leaving it up to teachers how many students teachers allow in their classes. There is still no change in prop policies and we’re all still under the mask mandate.

I feel the time to open the door to more students as well as to fresh air is close! But when I think about the possibility of any one of us being a carrier, I realize I won’t be ready for this April 1st. While more of our community is getting vaccinated, we’re also, as you probably know, dealing with B117, a more infectious strain of covid. With the lack of air exchange in our studio I worry about us being 6 ft apart for an extended period of time.

Please be patient a little while longer. Once more of us are immune, our community numbers are once again going down, and I can open the door while we practice, I will happily welcome as many of you in as the CDC allows! I believe this is only a matter of weeks, not months.

For those of you who are disappointed, I hear you. If you are excited to return, let me know and I will put you on the waiting list. And very soon we will be practicing together again!

For those of you who have found that Zoom is a better option for you don’t worry, I will continue our hybrid class model for the foreseeable future.

So much love,

Elle

Hope sleeps in our bones like a bear waiting for spring to rise and walk.

Purple Stone Egg Nestled with Dried Botanicals on Turquoise Plate

I love this quote so much, it makes me think of Marauding Bear, the spinal warm up similar to Cat/Cow, except instead of moving upon one plane you move any way your spine wants to move. It makes me want to tap into my instincts and move in ways that wakes up the hope that lives in my bones!

For those of you who have been asking about Wednesday classes and the possibility of moving them outdoors this summer, I have been talking to Linda with Winona Community Services about partnering with them to make this happen. I will let you know more once we iron out the details.

It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.
–Rainer Maria Rilke

It’s Spring Again!

It’s that time of year where I can’t resist this Rilke quote, and you once again lovingly put up with this repetition. This week also marks a year of us all dealing with the pandemic. I’m so proud of all of us who have kept our practice going despite the obstacles! And I have the utmost love and understanding for those of you who may be reading this and have not practiced in a year. Please give yourself a huge break. You are welcome back when the time is right for you!

I am also so thankful to you for all of your support this past year. I know how fortunate I am as a teacher to have such amazing students who are so generous with me. It is because of you that this past year of practice was possible.

For infinity students who are ready and wanting to practice in person, let me know!

I have heard from a few of you that you enjoyed the gentle practices, so we’re going to have another gentle practice this Wednesday.

When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.

Earnest Hemingway, The Moveable Feast

Hi 🙂

I feel like these flowers in the snow are balancing bold hope with the knowledge these blossoms may have to face a snow storm. Our practice can prepare us to be strong enough for this kind of courage. We bloom not because it’s safe, but because it’s our nature.

In other signs of hope we are allowed to use straps and blocks in the studio! If anyone who is coming to our in-person practices doesn’t have a strap or block you can sign one out from the studio. Then you can use the strap at home as well as bring it to your practices at Infinity.

We have some space in our Infinity studio practice so if you’re interested in showing up in person let me know and I’ll let you know which days have room.

I’m happily adjusting to my new schedule but didn’t have time this Friday to stay after class and catch up on cards. This will happen this week and I’ll write and let you know your new card totals soon.

Much Love,

Elle

Newsletter week of March 1st

Meditation and mindfulness are about paying attention to what is happening in the present moment, with a sense of curiosity and compassion. Knitting offers that perfect present-moment focal point. Sometimes my pattern is very simple and I am able to “zen out,” just focusing on the rhythm of the movement—making knitting feel like a meditation in motion. Other times, the pattern is very complex, requiring all of my focused attention to count stitches and toggle between techniques.

The Yoga of Knitting: Peace in Every Stitch by Michelle Dalbec

Hello Loves,

When you look at the schedule below you’ll notice we’re back to our regularly scheduled programing with a week full of Forrest Inspired Vinyasa classes and a Back to Basics class on Wednesday morning. I heard from a number of you that you enjoyed the gentle variation so I’m thinking of weaving in a few gentle classes here and there.

Heads up, this week classes through Root River Yoga are free to all new students. Check out the FB event for more information.

I also have some personal news to share: on March 5th I’ll begin working part-time at Yarnology! Many of you know that I learned to knit and crochet while I was recovering from Lyme and it’s become a passion of mine. The prospect of spending hours surrounded by gorgeous yarn alone would be enough to tempt me! However, after meeting with owners Gaby and Kelly, I realized I’d want to work for them even if they were selling barbed wire. Their compassion, creativity, and clarity let me know I’ve landed in the right place.

I am still working at HCO on Mondays and now that it’s a bit warmer will be once again taking individuals for outings that primarily consist of driving around and listening to music. If you are interested in us stopping by for a quick, masked wave and hello let me know. For those of you who were already a part of this, thank you! Small gestures can indeed make a huge difference.

Lastly, no yarn or kittens were harmed in the image above.

xoxo

Newsletter Week of Feb. 15th

Revolutionary love is a well-spring of care, an awakening to the inherent dignity and beauty of others and the earth, a quieting of the ego, a way of moving through the world in relationship, asking: ‘What is your story? What is at stake? What is my part in your flourishing?’ Loving others, even our opponents, in this way has the power to sustain political, social and moral transformation. This is how love changes the world.”

― Valarie Kaur

Happy Valentines Day!

Jen Bayer began the tradition of putting up sheets of paper in our studio during February that simply said “Love Your _________” leaving it up to all of us to fill in the blank. As we practice being loving in our families, our communities, and the world, a good place to begin is with ourselves. What do we easily love about ourselves? What have we learned to love through hard work? What is hard to love about ourselves? What have we never considered loving before? While these are good questions to ask ourselves anytime of the year, the emphasis on hearts this time of year can serve as reminders for us to do this work.

Root River Yogis, it’s time to register for our next session. Be kind to Amanda and all of us teachers and do this quickly so no one has to lose sleep over if there are enough to keep going. And now is an especially good time to think of those friends and family members who might benefit from Root River Zoom Yoga as new students attend for free the first week in March.

For everyone practicing yoga right now, remember that our body’s natural response to continued cold is to narrow our blood vessels in our limbs to divert more circulation to our organs in a process called vasoconstriction. The result is that we may feel stiffer. Basically, you’re not losing ground if you could almost touch your toes last month and now they seem like a long way away. Just be patient with yourself; you are still getting all the benefits of yoga practicing with this February range of motion, I promise.

Much Love,

~Elle

Newsletter for week of Feb 7th

“What is easy is sustainable. Birds coast when they can.”

Adrienne Maree Brown, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds

Hello,

If this quote is familiar to you, it could very well be from a past newsletter. It may seem that I’m just being lazy, or perhaps playing out the sentiment within the quote by making things easy on myself… and come to think of it, that is true! However, this quote has been on my mind this week, partly because Heather announced we get to use blocks again in the studio, thus making things easier on our bodies, and lowering my stress level a great deal!

When it gets cold — below zero cold — things just seem harder. I don’t want to move, I just want to stay under a blanket. I feel stiff and sore. We’ve also been dealing with a pandemic for a year now, and though we have much to be hopeful for, we are a long way from “back to normal”. The conundrum I face is that when I need my practice the most, it can be the most difficult to motivate myself to get on the mat.

Hence, remembering this quote. How can we make our path to our mat easier? How can we make our practice more enticing? These answers will likely be different for each of us, but here are a few ideas.

  • If you are practicing at home and you miss music, play some! If there is favorite music that I play contact me, I’m more than happy to share play lists.
  • Set up practice space ahead of time so all you have to do is show up.
  • Find ways to make your space enticing, such as pillows, blankets, candles, more pets, less pets, etc. Be creative!
  • Let me or your yoga friends know you’re coming. Adding in some gentle accountability can be a huge help.

See you on the mat!

~Elle

Yoga with Elle Week of 2/1/2021

“Paying attention is a form of reciprocity with the living world, receiving the gifts with open eyes and open heart.”

Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants

I’m sure many of you, like me, are looking back to a year ago, and remembering what our lives were like right before everything shut down the first time. And I’m sure that, like me, many of you are looking to the future and wondering what our new normal will be like once things open back up.

I’m so proud of us for keeping our little yoga community together. I’m so impressed with you for keeping up your practice! I’m so filled with empathy for those of you who might still be waiting to be inspired to practice yoga again, or don’t have time or space to figure out a home practice.

Thank you so much for your support of me and each other. I am so blessed to have you all in my life. Seriously, you are the best!

As always let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.

Yoga with Elle Week of 1/25/2021

We crave and need challenge, adventure, and a daily diet of delight.
― Ana Forrest

Just in case you haven’t been downtown Winona lately, or you never come to downtown Winona, I wanted to show off Gretchen Mulkey’s windows at Infinity Yoga Studio. Thank you Gretchen for making Infinity such an inviting place!

This week’s class schedule is business as (new) usual. For Root River Yogis, Amanda makes it super easy, just keep showing up as you do! For those of you practicing with me Monday/Wednesday/Friday you too can continue as usual. You may have noticed a few extra messages from Zoom about being registered for classes last Friday, nothing is changing, I just extended our set schedule and I wasn’t super smooth about it. Ah well. If you have any questions or something doesn’t look right let me know!

I continue to be inspired by you all and so moved by all of your support. You show me through your actions and your presence that we are all in this together. Thank you.

Newsletter for Week of Jan 18th. Ways to Say Hello On and Off the Mat.

It turns out that when breathing at a normal rate, our lungs will absorb only about a quarter of the available oxygen in the air. The majority of that oxygen is exhaled back out. By taking longer breaths, we allow our lungs to soak up more in fewer breaths.
― James Nestor, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art

Hello Friends!

I wasn’t able to catch up on everyone’s card yet, but I’ll go in early to make sure I get to everyone’s on Monday. You’ll have your answers soon, thanks for your patience.

Brett plans on being back in Zoom class this Monday and has promised to bring kitten Bod to the camera to say hello.

Speaking of saying hello, let me know if you’d like me to stop and wave with one of the residents that I work with through HCO. Right now a lot of our outings are driving around and listening to music just to get everyone out of the house. I have permission to stop and say hello to people I know. If you’re interested in a brief stop and tend to be home in the afternoons, please let me know. I’ve had the opportunity to do this a couple of times thus far, and it’s been really fun.

So much love,

The only meaningful thing we can offer one another is love. Not advice, not questions about our choices, not suggestions for the future, just love.
― Glennon Doyle

Hello Friends!

If you’re only going to read the first paragraph on this letter then all you need to know is Thursday morning Root River class is a special Yin Yoga class with the option of showing up in your comfy pj’s. You can join for this class even if you don’t usually practice with Root River.

I was in the midst of writing a love letter of gratitude for you all when Heather contacted Infinity teachers to let us know she was opening Infinity if teachers were interested in holding classes.  I have spent the rest of the weekend sitting with that.

I will still write the reflective piece and maybe share it. For now I just want you to know that as I look back on what I’ve been through this past year, the main constant in my life has been my yoga practice, and all of you. I don’t know what I would have done without you. Thank you.

As for in-person classes, I have some mixed emotions. I would love to see you again, especially those of you who can’t make it to Zoom classes. With the added precautions of 12 feet between us all while we’re practicing and everyone wearing a mask, I believe we could meet with minimal risk.  I would continue offering classes via Zoom as I did right before Infinity closed down so this wouldn’t negatively effect any of those who are happy with our Zoom practice. It could be a way to bring the group back together a bit during the cold time of year when we might really need the camaraderie.

I am also very aware that practicing in a mask isn’t comfortable. And with the same prop restrictions we were dealing with before, it’s not exactly going to feel like normal times. Not to mention our community is not yet out of the woods when it comes to Covid hospitalizations so opening up feels a bit counterintuitive. So when Heather asked me if I was going to teach in person, I didn’t have an easy answer for her.

On the official Infinity schedule our classes are going to be listed as Zoom only. I am opening up registration for our group only, for Monday Jan 11th at 8:15am and Friday Jan 15th at 7:45am so we can give it a try and see how it goes. There is room for 4 students and me, if 3 or 4 of you want to meet in person and try practicing in a mask to see how it is, let me know. If not, I will understand and we will wait a bit longer and I’ll put my energy towards a renewed effort to record.

Classes will still be available via Zoom no matter what. Please reach out to me with any questions or ideas, or to let me know how you feel about all of this.

So much love,

Elle

Cat looking at Solstice Candle

Hello Friends!

As witnessed by the above photo, Yeti Cat and I enjoyed a quiet Solstice meditation and lit a candle to mark the time of Solstice. Usually Yeti is wandering the house on his own at 4am in the morning, but he seemed open to me sharing this quiet time with him.

Our little white dog, Lulu Belle the Bandit Queen, has been enjoying lots of walks these dark days. Since she has a skin condition, Discoid Lupus, which prevents her from safely enjoying sunshine, I have a new appreciation for early sunsets and sunless days because it’s so easy to find good times to walk with her!

In general this week I find myself noticing the difference mindset makes. While I’m not suggesting that you try to force yourself to feel a different way about darkness, or anything really, I do find it interesting what a difference context can make to my interpretation of similar circumstances. Ok, I’ll dare to say it: while I have the utmost compassion for everyone suffering from seasonal depression caused by too little sunlight… I am finding myself secretly and quietly loving the darkness this year. I wish you all surprising blessings during our unusual holiday season!

You’ll also notice that I’m avoiding the “New Year, New You” type of newsletter. I love you the way you are. What I wish for you in the New Year isn’t for you to change yourself; if anything I hope your appreciation of yourself grows. I wish happiness and health for you.

I have also taken the morning to catch up on bookwork. For those of you paying me personally for classes not offered through studios, I have created a Google Doc to keep records of it and shared them with you. Let me know if you’re having trouble finding it, or if you have any questions.

Much Love,

Elle

Winter Solstice Newsletter

“My old grandmother always used to say, Summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Feast for Crows

Window Decoration Gingerbread Man doing yoga. Created by one of the yoga students.

Hello Friends!

Gretchen Mulkey has continued to create beautiful windows and I so appreciate it! It could easily feel sad looking at the darkened studio where we used to all practice together, but who could feel sad looking at these Gingerbread Men? Not me!

I feel like I’m not great at writing inspirational emails about finding the light in the darkness because I am never sure how they will land or how appropriate the message is for the recipient. And in general, I tend to shy away from writing wise things that seem to imply me having life all figured out because it feels disingenuous. I have experienced the power of gratitude practices in my life, but I have also experienced the harm of trying to lie to myself and pretend everything was fine when it wasn’t.

I will share a moment that I think of this time of year. In December of 2002 my Mom was just settling into Hospice. And on a morning where the weight of the fact that she was dying very soon was hitting me, I opened a card from a woman I didn’t know who was a friend of my Grandfather. It said, “When it’s dark enough you can see the stars,” a quote by Emerson. On the inside was a short note from her telling me who she was and encouraging me to notice that I had more support than I realized. I remember that feeling of holding tight to the hope that this was true, because in that moment my life felt impossible. And just because I was looking for stars, or trusting that they were there did not make that time easy or enjoyable. But I kept that cheesy card in front of me to remind me to look, and I can honestly say that at every impossible-seeming turn, some kind of help came through. And of course Marion, my Grandfather’s friend, was one of those unexpected lights. Through her stories I got to know a whole other side of Grandpa than the one I knew during his life.

I sincerely hope you are able to see the stars around you now. Well, I hope your life doesn’t seem as dark as mine did that year, but undoubtedly there are things that are hard for you right now. Maybe the solstice tomorrow can remind us all to look for those lights most easily seen in the dark.

I’m sure you know by now that Walz lightened up restrictions a bit in Minnesota. We’re still not holding in person classes at Infinity until at least Jan. 4th. As much as I miss you all, keeping our distance for now feels like the right thing to do to keep everyone safe. I will let you know more when Heather tells me more about when Infinity will open back up and what precautions they will take.

For now, Zoom classes continue. I’m not holding class on Friday Dec. 25th, but will on Jan. 1st, so if you’re looking for a way to ring in 2021, I hope you’ll join us.

Much Love,

Elle

This week I got a few messages thanking me for keeping Infinity yoga classes going. You are so welcome, I love you, I love our practice together. I also want to be very clear, your support is essential for keeping our Winona yoga group practicing together. Without your personal engagement I wouldn’t have the energy to keep teaching. Without your financial support I wouldn’t be able to afford to devote so much of my time to keeping this all together. You are amazing. I feel so humbled to know you and practice with you.

For those of you in Root River Yoga, I just committed to another season of yoga with you all! Soon you will receive an email from Amanda letting you know it’s time to register, please do so right away so we can all rest easy that we have the attendance we need to continue!

My Infinity classes are now on Zoom! While the in-person classes are filled, you can safely join us anytime. The Zoom links are in the schedule below. If you have any questions about how this works, reach out, I can help.

And lastly, though not certainly not least, through some editing magic on Brett’s part we managed to record last Wednesday morning’s Zoom class, so there’s a new video for you!

Reach out with anything you need.

Much Love,

Elle

Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.

solitary fall tree on a white background, just beginning to loose it' leaves. Graceful, peaceful, perhaps a bit lonely.

Hi 🙂

Today I am encouraging my cells to breathe in as much of this sunshine and dreamy warmth as they can. From this place of joy I’m looking forward to how we can best stay connected this winter.

As you know I’ve added a Yoga with Elle Zoom class on Wednesdays morning. Most of you who have been attending aren’t coming to in-person classes right now so it’s been especially sweet to see your faces and feel your presence as we practice.

This week, I’m also experimenting with broadcasting through Zoom whilst teaching classes at Infinity. Hopefully by Friday this is an offering I can provide. For the time being, I’m also limiting the Infinity class to our closed group.

Of course if Infinity needs to close, Infinity classes will go completely online. While I hope this won’t be the case I feel good about knowing we’re ready to switch over any time we need too.

If you’re curious about Infinity’s protocols should one of our community need to quarantine or is diagnosed with Covid, check out Oct. 20th’s Newsletter where I share what I know. If you’re curious about Infinity’s Ionizer air purifier let me know and I will forward the information that Heather sent the teachers.

Below is this week’s schedule. As always, if you have any questions, or if there’s anything else I can do for you, get ahold of me.

Much Love,

Elle

I thought it would take a long time to heal, but everything snapped into focus all at once. I realized that love is revolutionary when we channel it…

― Valarie Kaur, My Vote is My Voice—And Voting Is An Act Of Love

Happy Halloween and Full Moon!

Last night, after enjoying a campy horror movie with friends via Plex and Zoom, I looked at the moon through the window and thought back to times in my life where instead of solitary meditations and virtual connection, the full moon inspired gathering around fires and live music. I’m not sad, exactly. In all honesty, my mood and energy levels were matched perfectly with this weekend’s light celebration, but I am mindful of how essential it is for us to connect with our natural world and each other.

Some of you have an invite to a Yoga with Elle contact list via Google Docs. Please add your info if you want to be in contact with the group that practices with me at Infinity Yoga. If you weren’t added and want to be, let me know. If you want to be off of the doc, let me know and I will remove you from sharing.

Trail through woods covered in leaves.

Hello Everyone!

At first glance Brett’s photo from our hike together and the quote from See No Stranger have nothing to do with each other, but reading Valarie Kaur and spending time outside have been very centering for me. I am remembering once again that joy is good for my health and love is necessary.

Speaking of how I feel joy and love, thank you to those of you who showed up for our inaugural Wednesday morning Zoom class last week! There were glitches, so it meant the world to me to be practicing with people I knew and trusted. This week should run smoother, and if you want to join us, the link is in the schedule below. If you already registered last week, you’re good to go, and you’ll get a reminder and a link in your email before class.

For those of you following along with the struggles of returning to a Wednesday morning practice you know we’ve had several obstacles to overcome. My schedule, the weather, no indoor space available to practice together, to name a few. In the past I have gotten lukewarm responses from most of the Infinity yogis to the idea of Zoom classes, and I get it. I have mixed feelings myself! But I’m going to give it a try anyway starting this Wednesday and continuing through November – at least. For all the things that aren’t great about online classes, here are a few things that are: We have room for everyone who wants to join, we can use props, we can stay after and chat with each other, and my cats can more effectively be my hype men as I teach.

This Wednesday is the first one, and while I’ve been teaching Zoom classes through other studios for months, I haven’t set one up and run one all by myself. Please be patient with me. Also the screen says record, but there will not be a recording available of this week’s class, I’m still figuring this part out.

If you’re on my email list, a separate email will show up with the link. If you’re not and you want to join us, send me a message.

Wednesday morning classes, like all my videos, are offered on a pay-what-you-can-if-you-can basis. Use this PayPal link to do so. If you are already paying for classes with me through a different studio consider sending the equivalent of what you pay per class. If you already have another trade arrangement set up with me, it applies. If you want to come but it’s not in the budget, you are still welcome. In fact, extra love your way.

Infinity COVID Protocols and how they affect us.

At our last Infinity teacher meeting Heather shared her protocols for if and when COVID touches Infinity. Please know these are my understandings of what she told us a couple of weeks ago, so they are subject to change. Once Heather posts them please read through them.

Level 1: If any student or teacher at Infinity notifies us they have been exposed to COVID and a doctor has told them they need to go into quarantine, they stay home and for the rest of us, the mask to mat policy changes to wearing masks all the time.

In case anyone wants one, I am bringing paper masks like the one I wear because I find them much easier to wear and breath in. If you’re reaching into the bag to grab one please sanitize your hands first and make sure you just grab it by its strap.

Level 2: If any teacher or student tests positive for COVID. The studio closes for at least 2 weeks and there are Zoom classes only. Infinity cards will apply for these classes.

If it’s me who needs to be quarantined, either Gretchen Mulkey will sub and you can meet in person, or I’ll teach via Zoom. Probably a combination.

Your privacy will be protected and Infinity won’t announce who is quarantined or sick. If it’s me, I will just tell you what’s going on.

Love note from me:

Be well everyone, I love you. I know I say it all the time, but it’s because it’s true. My life is so much better with you in it! Thanks for the patience, the support, and inspiration to continue with my own practice.

xoxo

Tips for Practicing At Home

Clovis never could resist an outstretched hand. R.I.P.
  • Create a space for yourself, but don’t get bogged down in creating a perfect space for yourself.
  • Put your class on the calendar. Make space in your day.
  • Make it special for yourself. Maybe this means putting on your favorite fancy yoga pants, maybe this means you finally get to practice in your pjs.
  • Reach out to me if you get stuck.

Newsletter and Schedule for Week of Oct. 12th

What is easy is sustainable. Birds coast when they can.

― Adrienne Maree Brown, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds

Hello Everyone!

Newsletters are back, and taking my own advice, or more accurately Adrienne Maree Brown’s, I’m going to keep this easy.

While there wasn’t excitement about online practices on Wednesday, there were requests for more outdoor yoga even though it’s getting cooler. So me and anyone game are going to dress in layers, bring our blankets, and meet at Sinclair on Wednesday at 8:15am!

As always reach out if there’s anything I can do to make your practice better.

So much Love,

Elle

Things to know about Yoga with Friends Outside:

  • It’s getting chilly, dress in layers, maybe bring a cap for your head and a blanket for under the mat… and maybe an extra one for over you during savanna.
  • If you have trouble hearing please set up close (but still 6 ft away) to me.
  • Wear a mask for socializing before and after class. Remember to social distance.
  • Bring your mat and a block or a blanket if you have them.
